In a few words, tell us a little bit about yourself?
Hi, my name is Gabriele, I’m 35 and I live in Italy, Milan area. I work in computer graphics (3d, special fx, that sort of things…), that was my main interest in spare time before photography. I am amazed by beauty, I love nature, volleyball, food and wine.
How long have you been a photographer?
I still don’t consider myself a real photographer… :-) …but if I need to pick a date, I was gifted the first reflex in 2008, so they are 8 years that I’m “playing” with photography.
How did you discover photography?
It was the hobby of some of my friends: listening to their conversations and looking at their photos, I was attracted and curious about that world. I soon started to join their talk, asking questions, and later looking for a camera: my interest was clear, and in few months it became reality in the form of a reflex, as a gift for my graduation.
How was your first shooting? What did you shoot?
I was interested in shooting people. So, I soon decided to participate in a workshop (portraits and glamour) organized near my hometown. At the first practical lesson, there was an amazing model named Lisa: on one side, there was her, beautiful and great and professional; on the other side, there was me, lost, embarrassed, in the desperate need of overcome my fears and understand what to do. It was quite terrible, especially because it was clear how much I was unprepared; but that pushed me to accept the challenge, and now I’m so glad I did it.
How would you describe your style?
Dirty. I don’t like the perfectly sharp and correct images that modern cameras can produce: that’s why I like luminous lenses with short depth of field and a lot of blur, while in post-production I love to add the right amount of noise and grade colors to my needs. I am more interested in the artistic side of photography, instead of technical correctness.
What does photography mean to you?
It’s an artistic tool that allows me to freely express myself. That’s the main reason I’m keeping photography as an hobby: in such a way, I can plan my own projects, develop them with my style, and dedicate to each photo the time needed for reaching the result I’m looking for.
What inspires you?
Beauty. I am a slave of Beauty.
What would you like to photograph?
Beauty… have I already mentioned it? :-) Lately, I like to tell stories: I often look for a story-line that inspires all the sets of my shooting. It doesn’t need to be evident… just a guide in background. I already have several ideas that just need the right time, model and location (…details…) to be done, and I’m sure others will come in the future.
A photographer you particularly admire?
There are many photographers that inspire me, such as David Bellemere, Jan Scholz and Luca De Nardo. But the one who deserves the special mention is Marc Lagrange, a Belgian photographer that I’ve always admired for the style and the strength of his photography: the book “Diamonds & Pearls” is to me an inexhaustible source of inspiration. Sadly, he early passed away few months ago, but his heritage is already huge.
What is happiness?
The freedom to express what we really are: if it isn’t happiness, it certainly is its starting point.
If you could live anywhere, where would it be?
In a warm place (I don’t like cold weather), where I can develop my beauty projects with all I need: does that place exist? ^_^
What’s your next goal?
Doing better.
In a shorter time (the list of shootings waiting for publications is… scary…).
