In a few words, tell us a little bit about yourself?
Hi, my name is David Charlec. I was born in France and I moved to Canada a couple of years ago. I’ve been a designer and a developer for about 15 years now.
How long have you been a photographer?
I started taking photography seriously about 10 years ago, but it was mostly snapshots and vacation photos. I’ve only started being more focused and working with models in 2011.
How did you discover photography?
I helped out my dad by being his photographer on stage, while he was doing a concert. I had a crappy digital point and shoot and, while I did an ok job, I was surrounded by serious photographers with serious cameras. It made me want to be part of that group.
How was your first shooting? What did you shoot?
Being frustrated by only taking photos on vacations and not practicing as much as I’d hoped, I looked for another venue to take photos. I looked for amateurs models in my area. I was fortunate enough to find Léa, a beautiful model, who would become one of my closest friends. She’s such a pro, it was a fantastic first experience.
How would you describe your style?
I’m always looking to define my style. To be honest I’m not sure I’ve found it yet. I’m definitely leaning towards something intimate and natural. I want to make people look their best, without tricks, and without caring about beauty standards.
What does photography mean to you?
Photography holds a particular place in my life. I’m fortunate enough to have a job that pays the bills and gives me a chance to practice photography without any financial pressure. It’s my main way to escape, express myself and get out of my semi-introverted shell. I’ve met so many of my close friends that way, and it has also opened many doors for me.
What inspires you?
The majority of my work is around portraiture and I get my inspiration from the people I’m photographing. Whether it’s a model I’m meeting for the first time, or a friend that I’ve known for years.
What would you like to photograph?
I’m more and more drawn to travelling and exploring the world. I still want to keep a human and personal component to my photos, but I’d like to diversify the setting and the people.
A photographer you particularly admire?
The first name then comes to mind is Jan Scholz aka Micmojo. I was blown away by his portraits and he’s one of the main reasons I tried using old film cameras. I bought a Rolleiflex because he had one, and after seeing the first scans I got rid of my digital gear and shot everything on film for the next 2 years! But shooting film and having the same camera is definitely not everything, he is in a different category altogether, I still don’t know how Jan does it.
What is happiness?
Being close to the people you love, having exciting plans and moving forward.
If you could live anywhere, where would it be?
Everywhere! I’ve lived in a few places in France for the better part of my life. Discovering a new culture in Canada was amazing and I’d love to experience that again. Japan, Thailand, New Zealand, Netherlands, Hong Kong, Germany and Denmark are on my list!
What’s your next goal?
I’m still looking for my style, a signature look. I haven’t found it yet, so I’m still going after that goal. I’m looking for more encounters, collaborating with exciting and crazy people.
