In a few words, tell us a little bit about yourself?
My name is Juan Martín Uranga, I’m 22 and although I’ve been living in Buenos Aires for 4 years, I was born in a little town in the argentine Pampas surrounded by family, nature and simplicity. I consider myself as a homely person, meticulous in my work and with very good memory.
How long have you been a photographer?
I started playing with a camera when I was a teenager, but I began working as a fashion photographer three years ago, while studying.
How did you discover photography?
I came across photography as I see it nowadays when social media networks started to develop. The easy way to share photos among friends sparked the possibility to communicate through the pictures. Therefore I started to bring a little digital camera everywhere I went to capture views that I’d like to share later.
How was your first shooting? What did you shoot?
Everything was kinda gradual. As I had always lived in the pampas, the first things I shot were the landscapes around that I knew so well. I particularly remember, as a young teenager, being with a couple of friends lying on the grass on a summer evening. I was playing with the zoom of a small digital camera and took a shot of the trees above us. Over time, I started portraying close relatives and friends.
How would you describe your style?
I find it pretty difficult to talk about myself, always fearing that I couldn’t portrait an objective view of my work. I would say that my style is classic, diverse, with a particular focus on the notion of the postmodern woman drawing a line between innocence and intrinsic sexuality.
What does photography mean to you?
I must admit the sound of the shutter regulates my life. If I am not taking photographs, surely I am organizing the next shoot. It has become the best way to communicate my inner passions as I grow older and I feel increasingly distant from the written language and the culture of the word that surround us.
What inspires you?
I’m inspired by people, their stories, origin, their beauty, their attitude . Also films, directors, personalities, models. From each one, I try to capture what the camera gives me his image.
What would you like to photograph?
Before I started working in fashion photography, I loved documentary and photo-essay. As I needed to work to get financial support, I devoted myself to a more commercial branch of the art. I would love to go back to those disinterested, rural, daily life shots.
A photographer you particularly admire?
I particularly like the art of Ralph Gibson. I got to know him through a teacher’s recommendation, a teacher that I admired so much, while I was studying in Buenos Aires. The photos of Gibson are so easy to recognize, his framing, his slices of reality and the usage of high contrasts, I love it because of its simplicity but also the great ability to communicate.
What is happiness?
Seconds, that fill the soul of motivation and smiles.
If you could live anywhere, where would it be?
I think I would feel full if I could live on a farm, surrounded by animals and nature, but enough close to a great city (such as Barcelona) to be able to continue with my work.
What’s your next goal?
Further improvement, and keep on living to discover new circumstance under the veil to photograph them.
