Thais Marininterview
An interview with the brilliant São Paulo based photographer, Thais Marin and a preview of her "Daddy’s little Girl" series, starred by beautiful Ana Laura, enjoy!
In a few words, tell us a little bit about yourself?
I`m 25, born and raised in São Paulo, Brazil. I grew up in a family of many women. I guess this influences me now as a photographer, as I try to search and show the strength of each particular woman in a photograph. I’m a creative, fun, sensitive, loving person; I always try to help as I can and tend to put all of me in all I do. I love to photograph people and i have at least 5 lines of thoughts working at all times! haha.
How long have you been a photographer?
For about 2 years.
How did you discover photography?
I was an architecture student, and in my fourth year of college I decided to take a sabbatical year and moved to California. I was overwhelmed and dealing with a severe depression after the death of my grandfather and no longer wanted to continue with that major. As I got treatment for my depression and adjusted to life abroad I discovered a passion for photography and bought my first camera. When I came back to Brasil I dropped architecture school and started to study photography.
How was your first shooting? What did you shoot?
Apart from the photography classes I started to photograph my friends. I then started to build a studio in my home and My first official shoot there was with a college from architecture school where I could finally recreate some of the ideas I had in mind.
How would you describe your style?
I think I have a romantic, sweetened approach to photography. I photographed a lot of different things, and I respect the individual style of each person I shoot. I feel my style is quite flexible as I try to incorporate my own ideas and style into the style of that particular person. I’m a bit of a perfectionist, and I’m always thinking what can take a photo to the next level.
What does photography mean to you?
Photography means everything to me. It gave me a sense of purpose and I’m excited for all the possibilities to work with in the future. I always loved art and tried many different things, like oil painting and drawing but in photography I think I found the best way to express myself. There’s so much I want to photograph!
What inspires you?
I’m inspired by what makes a person unique. I’m inspired to make a difference, to help people feel good about themselves. I`ve photograph cancer patients and girls with low self esteem and to see that my work influenced them in a positive way is what inspires me the most. Also, seeing people get inspired by my art is a major fuel to continuing doing what I do.
What would you like to photograph?
I like to photograph women the most. Being a woman I know all the self-doubt and body image problems all women face from time to time and with my photography I try to show them and other women like them a better way to see themselves. I would like to photograph many different women around the world!
A photographer you particularly admire?
Nowadays my favorites are Martina Matencio, from Barcelona and the american Mark Harless. Both have so much depth in their images and a very unique style you can easily recognize.
What is happiness?
Happiness to me is having a purpose. Being proud of the person you are and the life you live. Happiness is getting out of bed with ideas and goals. I struggled with depression for a period of my life and for a long time a had none of theses feelings. And now, for me, having a purpose in life is what makes me happy. I found myself useful through photography and that’s my biggest happiness nowadays.
If you could live anywhere, where would it be?
So hard to choose only one place! I’m a bit restless so I imagine moving a lot! I`ve been to beautiful places and would like to see many more so I would live all around the world if I could. Starting with California! :)
What’s your next goal?
My next goal is definitely traveling for photography purposes, and collaborating with models and brands I admire. I’m dreaming about photographing bikini models in paradisiac beaches!
