How would you describe yourself in a few words?
I am grateful for the people in my life and opportunities I have had. I am passionate about what I do and optimistic about not only my future but the world as a whole. I love with my entire heart and I’m a believer of the universe, who is consistently in a state of wanderlust no matter how adventurous I get. And oh! I love pineapples!
How long have you been a model?
I’m relatively new to modeling. I started in October of 2016, and am excited about all the momentum that I’ve built since joining this community.
How did you get into modelling?
I had always wanted to model, however I grew up believing that wasn’t an option for me. I was always told I would have to have something unique about me and I wasn’t sure what that was therefore I felt I wasn’t good enough. I dove into school and earned my Master’s in Industrial Organization Psychology and pursued a career in data analysis. In July of 2016, I went through a really bad breakup and realized I hadn’t really followed my own personal goals in my life which jolted me into focusing my energy and effort into the life I always wanted that I was told I could not have. This life includes facing my fears of not being good enough or having something unique and truly chasing my modeling career.
How was your first shooting? Tell us a bit about that first experience.
My first shoot was a great experience. It took place in my apartment building and we did a variety of photos since I was starting my portfolio. The photographer knew it was my first photoshoot and did a great job at helping me move through everything and identify areas for improvement to work on moving forward. Some of those photos are being featured here! My number one recommendation for aspiring models is truly to be yourself, it’s your uniqueness that makes you, you in this world. You are more than enough and you’re here to be every ounce of yourself. <3
What does modelling mean to you?
Modeling has helped me bring out a creative side of me I always felt I didn’t have. I have a very analytical mind and previously neglected embracing this side of me simply because I thought it was not an option in my life. Having the opportunity to model enabled me to work with a number of creative individuals that not only support my goals, but also challenge me to continue to build my skills in expressing myself creatively. Now that I’ve started, I have such a passion for it. It has also been a way for me to help inspire younger female generations to dream and dream big with all you have. It is never too late to start something new and go for what you want 170%.
A model you particularly admire?
Nikki Blackketter, she doesn’t identify as a model even though she models different fitness brands. However, she has been my inspiration to be a better human being in all ways of life for the past 2 years.
If you could choose, where would you like to shoot?
All around the world! I would love to travel the world and model in every single place I visit. If I had to choose a specific location, I’ve recently been drawn to the majestic and magical look of Bali, I would love to shoot there!
What is your dressing style in everyday life?
I have a 9 to 5 job in Chicago where I’m business casual however, when I’m not at work I like to wear skinny jeans and a soft black turtleneck. When I’m at home and just lounging with friends my go to is plum or black colored yoga pants and a fuzzy sweater.
If you could live anywhere, where would it be?
Bali or Sweden – I would love to move away from the US to have new experiences and learn new things! I like the idea of Bali because of the look and the warmth however I’ve always wanted to visit and see Sweden not only because of the beauty but also because of the research I’ve seen around how organizations run in that country.
What is happiness?
Living in the present, full of all the feels, whatever feel it is, it is beautiful and if it’s not happy it will be soon.
Where can we find you on a Friday night?
To be honest, you probably wouldn’t be able to find me, eeekkk! If I’m not traveling, I may be in the gym, or at home grilling steak and working on my modeling, fitness, and coaching business.
What’s your next goal?
Travel! I want to start traveling internationally to see the world, learn, and experience new things. I also have an online lifestyle coaching program called “Center Yourself” which is not only focused on fitness and nutrition but also focused on how to improve your overall well-being, self-love and confidence. It is currently going through the pilot stage and I would like to get that officially rolled out in the near future. Follow me on Instagram to find out when it launches! @dorothyjohnson
